In 1996, Elections Canada and the Mexican Federal Electoral Institute (IFE) signed a cooperation agreement which established official linkages between the two institutions. The objective of the agreement was to create the necessary conditions for consultations and exchanges addressing the administration of elections, including joint research and comparative analysis of the two electoral systems.
This original agreement has been updated in recent years. Both electoral authorities continue to work closely together increasingly in the area of providing training or advice to electoral bodies in emerging democracies.
