Canada-Mexico Relations

Canada-Mexico relations are characterized by strong political commitment and fluent dialogue in bilateral, North American, hemispheric and multilateral contexts. Then President-elect Felipe Calderón’s visit to Ottawa in October 2006 and the presence of Prime Minister Stephen Harper at the Mexican president’s inauguration ceremony demonstrate the importance of this relationship for both leaders.

Canada-Mexico relations have grown since diplomatic relations were established in 1944. Nowadays, with bilateral trade, frequent exchanges in the subject of good governance, recurring parliamentary meetings, collaboration with our mutual neighbour, the United States in areas like security and trade, and international cooperation in forums like the United Nations, Canada and Mexico have become important strategic partners.

Canada-Mexico relations take place on a personal as well as an institutional level. Every year, approximately one million Canadians visit Mexico; at the same time, almost 200,000 thousand Mexicans travel to Canada.
