Canada has enjoyed very good bilateral relations with Morocco since the latter gained independence in 1956. Like Canada, Morocco is a full member of La Francophonie. Because of this, Canada has close ties with Morocco, which is a significant source of immigration. The presence of what Morocco estimates to be a community of more than 100,000 Moroccans in Canada (it is the largest North African community in Canada) has become the strongest bond between Canada and Morocco. The Moroccan community, made up of Sephardic Jews and Muslims, has settled mainly in Montreal. Nearly 3,000 Canadians currently live in Morocco (90% of who are of Moroccan origin and have dual citizenship). Every year, hundreds of young Moroccans come to study in Canada, mainly in Quebec universities.
Royal Air Maroc offers several flights a week between Casablanca and Montreal.
With regard to development assistance, the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) maintains a major bilateral assistance program in Morocco in the areas of basic education (National Charter of Education and Training), vocational training (implementation of the skills-based approach to meet private sector needs), gender equality (for example, incorporation of this concept into public sector reforms and national strategy to fight violence against women), and citizen engagement (such as the project to decentralize the Moroccan government).
Canada's trade activities focus on promoting goods and services exports to Morocco as well as investment.
