Passports

Passport Canada

Passport Canada is responsible for issuing, revoking, withholding, recovering, and providing instructions on the use of Canadian passports.

All regular Canadian passports are printed by Passport Canada at their offices in Canada. Although application forms for passports are accepted at Government of Canada offices overseas, applications are not accepted at the Canadian government offices in the United States or Bermuda.

Canadians in the U.S. or Bermuda applying for a new or replacement passport must apply by mail to Passport Canada in Canada.

Canadian Consulate General Passport Services

While the Consular Services Section of the Consulate General does not issue passports, or accept application forms for regular passports, it:

  • Maintains a stock of Canadian Passport application forms;
  • Conveys passport information via this website, in response to email or fax enquiries, and in response to in-person enquiries;
  • Conducts reviews (in person) of completed application forms, for accuracy and thoroughness;
  • Accepts (in person) completed forms of the "Acknowledgment to Provision of Passport Services for a Minor Child" document, which it forwards to responsible passport issuing offices; and
  • Conducts outreach activities with residents and local service providers (e.g., photo studios, travel representatives) to improve understanding of the passport application process and border crossing requirements.

As part of its Consular responsibilities, the Consulate General of Canada (New York) offers limited emergency travel document issuance, including to Canadians who, due to loss or theft, find themselves stranded in the U.S. and require a travel document urgently to return to their country of residence.

Canadians (residents of Canada) who have had their passports lost or stolen while visiting the U..S, can exit the U.S. and enter Canada by air or surface with a valid Nexus card. Alternatively, if you hold proof of citizenship (birth certificate or citizenship certificate) plus valid government issued photo identification, you can exit the U.S. and enter Canada via surface means. This can be a direct bus/car/train trip or a combination of a domestic U.S. flight and surface transport (e.g., fly from NY city to Buffalo and then cross the border by car/bus). If all your documentation has been lost, and you need to return home urgently, you should contact the Consulate General, as you may be able to apply for a temporary passport

Canadians (residents of Canada) whose passports are lost or stolen while visiting Bermuda can exit Bermuda and enter Canada with proof of citizenship and official valid photo identification. In the case of an urgent travel requirement back to Canada, where no suitable identification is available, an application for a temporary passport can be made to the Consulate General in New York.

Canadians (residents of a third country) visiting the U.S. or Bermuda whose passports are lost or stolen, and who need to get home urgently, can apply for a temporary passport through the Canadian Consulate General (New York).

Canadians (U.S. residents) who, due to urgent travel requirements, cannot wait for regular passport issuance from Passport Canada, can travel to Canada and apply in-person at a Regional Passport Canada office for expedited regular passport issuance. Air travel from the U.S. to Canada can be made on a Canadian passport which is not yet expired, on a valid Nexus card, on a U.S. passport, or on a U.S. permanent resident card. Surface travel by car to Canada can be made through use of your Canadian birth or citizenship certificate in combination with valid official photo identification.
