Citizenship

Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) is the federal government department responsible for implementing citizenship legislation, managing the citizenship application process, and guiding applicants through the steps to becoming Canadian citizens.

The Consulate General of Canada (New York) works with CIC to ensure that:

  • Citizenship application forms and instructions are available to clients in their area;
  • Completed application forms are received and reviewed for accuracy and thoroughness;
  • Completed application forms are forwarded to CIC; and
  • General citizenship information is provided to clients in their area;

The Canadian Consulate General does not:

  • Process citizenship application forms;
  • Track the status of citizenship applications submitted to CIC in Canada; or
  • Make citizenship decisions.
