The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative is a U.S. law requiring all travellers to present a valid passport or other approved secure document when entering the U.S. from within the western hemisphere. Since January 2007, this law has applied to Canadian citizens entering the U.S. by air and from June 1, 2009 this law was extended to cover land and sea entry into the U.S.
