Medical Insurance

Canadians planning to travel abroad - even on a day trip - should purchase medical insurance before leaving Canada to avoid the high personal expenses that can result from medical treatment or hospitalization.

While the various Canadian provincial and territorial health insurances may cover some costs incurred in Bermuda or the U.S., payments will be limited at best, and almost certainly will be insufficient to cover the costs of local medical care. These costs could result in years of personal debt for those who travel unprepared.

Note: The Consulate General of Canada will not pay personal medical costs. It is essential for Canadians travelling to the U.S. and Bermuda obtain out-of-country health insurance before leaving Canada.
