Visas and Immigration

Important message:

Important changes regarding the process for submitting applications to the Consulate General in New York have recently been implemented. Furthermore, changes to what applications are accepted at this office have also been made. Please review the information below for accurate information regarding which applications are accepted at our office and the submission process.

Welcome to the visa section of the Consulate General of Canada to the United States of America in New York.

For information about going to Canada and to find out how to make an application at this office, please refer to our list of services below.

We provide these services to citizens of or persons legally admitted to Bermuda, St. Pierre et Miquelon and the United States (including Puerto Rico).

Visas and Immigration in New York

  1. The visa office in New York reviews applications made by citizens of, and persons lawfully admitted to, the United States (including Puerto Rico) for:
    1. A Temporary Resident Visa;
    2. A Work Permit;
    3. A Permanent Resident Travel Document;
    4. A Temporary Resident Permit;
    5. Criminal Rehabilitation; and
    6. Authority to Return to Canada.
       
  2. For citizens of, and persons lawfully admitted to Bermuda,  we also review applications in the above categories as well as Study Permit Applications.
  3. We also review applications for a Work Permit from people who hold valid visitor status in Canada. 
  4. Citizens and permanent residents of the USA do not need a Temporary Resident Visa to visit Canada and may also apply at a Port-of-Entry for:
    • A Study Permit;
    • A Work Permit;
    • A Temporary Resident Permit; 

How to submit an application?

If you are not an American citizen or a permanent resident of the United States (“green card holder”), but if you live in the United States and are a national of a country whose citizens require a visa to enter Canada and if you are eligible to apply to our office in New York:

Apply online:

To apply online, you must have access to a scanner or camera to create electronic copies of your documents for uploading and have a valid credit card for payment. Determine your eligibility and apply online.  

Apply in person:

You can submit your complete application in person to our office according to the following schedule: Monday, Wednesday and Friday between 8:30am and 10:30am (except during holiday closures)

Apply through our drop box:

You can submit your complete application in person through our drop box on Monday, Wednesday and Friday between 8:30 am and 10:30am. Applications submitted by drop box are processed according to the same processing standards as applications submitted in person or by mail.

Please note our office does not confirm receipt of documents sent to us. If you wish to receive notification that your application has arrived to our Consulate, we recommend that you send your documents through a courier or mail company that provides tracking services.

How to retrieve my documents?

Passports and original documents are no longer returned in person. All passports and documents will be returned by mail to Canada, Bermuda and the United States.

If your mailing address is in the USA:

  • Include a self-addressed United States Postal Services (USPS) Express mail flat rate envelope with the correct postage stamp affixed. Metered postage is not accepted.
  • Keep a record of the tracking number on the USPS Express mail label so that you  can track delivery of the envelope at www.USPS.com
  • For USPS Priority Mail envelopes, you must attach a delivery confirmation form with the correct postage stamp affixed. Metered postage is unacceptable. Please note priority mail envelopes do not have a tracking number.

If your mailing address is in Canada or Bermuda:

We return passports and documents to addresses in Bermuda or Canada by USPS First Class mail only with no tracking number.

IMPORTANT NOTES: Incomplete or invalid applications are not processed and are returned directly to the applicant. Also, if an application is submitted without an acceptable return envelope, our office will send your passports and original documents via regular mail with no tracking number. Our office cannot be held responsible for the safety of documents sent in this manner.
