Pennsylvanians and Canadians share treasured values and beliefs, especially those of democracy, tolerance, rule of law and cultural diversity. Together we have welcomed to our shores millions of immigrants seeking new lives and offered them opportunities to seek prosperity and enjoy the fruits of liberty. We have shared histories as well, such as when our ancestors worked together to bring slaves to freedom through the Underground Railroad that wound its way through Pennsylvania to its final destination in Canada. Our peoples have together fought to defend freedom and aid societies threatened by war or ravaged by natural disasters and poverty. In sharing this North American continent we also enjoy the benefits of innumerable close ties between family and friends that stretch across our common border and help create one of the most enduring peaceful relationships in the world.
