The Honorable Deepak Obhrai, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, recently visited the Philippines to highlight relations with Canada.
Mr. Obhrai joined Philippines President Benigno Aquino III at the ground-breaking ceremony of the CAE-Cebu Pacific Aviation Academy inside the Clark Freeport Zone in Pampanga province north of Manila. The academy is a joint venture between Montreal-based CAE and Cebu Pacific, one of the Philippines largest carriers. The project represents an approximate total investment of Cad$ 40 million.
Mr. Obhrai also visited a neighbourhood in Quezon City, which had been totally transformed by the work of Telus and Gawad Kalinga, a Philippine-based not-for-profit organization focused on building self-sufficient sustainable community. The visit showcased a concrete example of the realities of poverty in the Philippines, and the important role Canadian companies and individuals play in addressing related challenges through corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives.
The Parliamentary Secretary also met with members of the Canada-Philippines Parliamentary Friendship Group to discuss a broad range of topics related to the overall bilateral relationship, including trade and investment, peace and security, and immigration.
