How to apply for a permanent resident travel document
A separate application with the appropriate fees must be submitted for each person in your family, regardless of age, who requires a permanent resident travel document (PRTD).
Normally, permanent residents of Canada seeking to re-enter Canada have to use their permanent resident card. You require a PRTD to re-enter Canada if your permanent resident card is lost, stolen or expired.
- Check the processing times
Find out how long it takes to process a standard permanent resident travel document application at this office so that you will know how far in advance to apply. Please note that this is not a guarantee. You are urged to apply early to avoid disappointment.
- Obtain the application package, read the instruction guide and complete the application
The instruction guide contains important information about PRTDs and instructions to help you complete your application. Read the guide carefully and use the document checklist. Your application may be returned or refused if you do not provide all the requested information, documents and fees.
- Pay the processing fee
Please refer to the fee schedule for the cost of applying for a PRTD and how to pay. Please note that the processing fee is non-refundable in all cases.
- Submit your application and supporting documents
Submit your application package (forms and supporting documents) according to the guidelines for submitting an application to this office. All supporting documents must be submitted at the time of your application.
