Mr. Gilles Rivard is Ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative of Canada to the United Nations in New York City since November 1st, 2010. Prior to his appointment, Mr. Rivard was Canada’s Ambassador to the Republic of Haiti from June 2008 to October 2010.
He has more than 29 years of experience in international relations, including twelve years abroad in Guinea, Costa Rica, Peru, Haiti and New York City.
At the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), Mr. Rivard has held the positions of Program Director for Haïti, Cuba and the Dominican Republic; Director General of the Balkans, Caucasus and Central Asia programs; and Director General of policy, strategic planning and technical service for Africa. In 2004, he accepted an assignment in the Privy Council Office as Director of operations for the Global Affairs Secretariat. Upon his return to CIDA, in 2005, he was appointed Vice-President, Europe, Maghreb and Middle East. In 2007 he was appointed to Vice-President, Americas.
