Canada and Guinea-Bissau Relations

Canada and Guinea-Bissau established diplomatic relations in 1975. The Canadian Embassy in Dakar, Senegal, has been ensuring representation in Guinea-Bissau since 1976. Since 1983, Guinea-Bissau has been represented in Canada by its Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York, United States.

Canada strongly condemned the military coup in Guinea-Bissau on April 12, and closely monitors the situation in the country as it evolves.

With regards to the development assistance program, the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) does not maintain a bilateral program in Guinea-Bissau. Canada provides assistance to this country through various organizations. Canada also funds small local projects aiming to promote human rights and good governance through the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI), managed by the Canadian Embassy to Senegal. Official Canadian aid disbursements in Guinea-Bissau amounted to $5.18 million in 2010-2011. Official Development Assistance (ODA) priorities are:

  • Increasing food security;
  • Securing a future for children and youth;
  • Stimulating sustainable economic growth;
  • Promoting democracy;
  • Ensuring security and stability.

Canada has negligible trade relations with Guinea-Bissau. Trade reached $239,000 in 2011, of which $236,700 was Canadian exports and $2,600 was imports from Guinea-Bissau. Currently, Canada has no trade agreements in place with Guinea-Bissau.
