High Commission of Canada Congratulates South Africa on Recent Elections

May 13, 2014 - Commenting on the 2014 elections in South Africa, the High Commissioner of Canada to South Africa, Gaston Barban, issued the following statement:

“The High Commission of Canada congratulates the government and people of South Africa on the conduct of the country’s fifth democratic national and provincial elections.

“Coming after the recent passing of Nelson Mandela, the elections are a concrete expression of the ongoing legacy of South Africa’s first democratically elected president. Canada has been a strong advocate for South African democracy and was involved in the first inclusive, democratic elections, held in 1994.

“We look forward to working with the new government to strengthen economic ties and to continue to foster a peaceful, democratic and prosperous future for South Africa.”
