Working Holiday

Eligibility Criteria for the Working Holiday Category

The Working Holiday category is designed for Spanish citizens who intend to travel in Canada and who wish to find temporary paid employment to help pay for their stay. There are two sub-categories in the Working Holiday category in the Canada-Spain agreement.

Working-Holiday (WHP): This category is designed for Spanish youth wishing to go to Canada for tourism and cultural discovery purposes, while being authorised to work on a casual basis in order to increase their financial resources or to do volunteer work (maximum 12 months).

Student Summer Job: This category is designed for Spanish registered students of a postsecondary educational institution or training centre institution who plan to travel to Canada during academic vacations and who wish to work on a casual basis in order to increase their financial resources (maximum 3 months).

To be eligible for the Working Holiday/Student Summer Job category, you must:

  • be a Spanish citizen who normally resides in Spain;
  • be between the ages of 18 and 35 (inclusive);
  • have the equivalent of C$2,500 to help cover your expenses at the beginning of your stay,  please note you may have to present evidence of these funds when you enter Canada;
  • be prepared to take out health-care insurance for the duration of your stay – you may have to present evidence of this insurance when you enter Canada;
  • be registered as a student in a post-secondary institution or in a training centre in Spain,if applying to the Student Summer Job category;
  • pay a participation fee of C$150;
  • not have participated in the Working Holiday category before. As a Spanish citizen, you may participate in International Experience Canada only twice and each time in a different category;
  • you must wait at least three months after the expiry date on your previous IEC work permit to Canada before you submit your second application to IEC.
