Every year, the Embassy of Canada joins in celebrating La Journée internationale de la francophonie at the Alliance Française in Bangkok. This year’s celebration featured booths representing member states of the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie and other French-speaking companies and organizations operating in Thailand.
Large groups of students travelled to Bangkok specifically for the occasion, and were eager to take part in the various activities offered by the booths as well as a petanque tournament and a karaoke contest, in which one of the featured song was "Les yeux de Marie" by Quebecoise artist Andrea Lindsay.
This year the fair attracted some 4,000 visitors, mainly secondary-school students from all regions of the country, as well as families and children from the Lycée Français in Bangkok.
The Embassy booth highlighted Canadian francophone culture through the use of a vocabulary game in which participants were asked to guess the meaning of various French Canadian words and phrases, with prizes given to those who guessed correctly. A slapshot competition provided a physical introduction to Canadian culture and proved enormously popular with the younger visitors!
Canada is extremely proud of its bilingual tradition and La Fête de la Francophonie is an excellent opportunity for the Embassy to both promote French-language education in Thailand as well as to showcase this important aspect of Canadian identity in the context of the 50th anniversary of our diplomatic relations with Thailand.
