The Embassy of Canada in Ankara, Turkey, is accredited to Azerbaijan and Canadian officials travel regularly to Azerbaijan. In 2004, Azerbaijan opened a resident embassy in Ottawa. Our common membership in multilateral institutions including the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) and the United Nations (UN) and its agencies, facilitates cooperation on issues of mutual concern.
The Director General of DFAIT’s Europe and Eurasia Bureau led bilateral consultations with the Azerbaijani Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs in Baku in April 2010. In April 2009, a group of Canadian professors from the University of Waterloo visited Azerbaijan to promote educational programs and training experience.
Economic relations remain modest. In 2010, Canadian imports were $542 million, down significantly from $1.2 billion in 2009. Merchandise exports to Azerbaijan were also down from $31.0 million the previous year to $20 million in 2010.
As part of the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives, Canada supports civil society development, including human rights, democratic development, youth, and poverty reduction in Azerbaijan. A small but growing number of Azerbaijani students are undertaking undergraduate studies at Canadian universities supported by an Azerbaijani state fund.
Azerbaijan also benefits from CIDA’s funding of multilateral partners including support to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, the Canadian Executive Service Organization’s Volunteer Advisors Program, and three OSCE initiatives (Environment and Security, Anti-Trafficking Initiative, and Human Dimension of Security).
