Canada - United Arab Emirates Relations
Canadian exports to the UAE reached $1.87 billion in 2014. In fact, it is the 4th largest export market for Canada in the world relative to its population. Canadian companies are supported by the Trade Commissioner Service and Export Development Canada.
The UAE estimates that its investments in Canada are valued at $30 billion, creating jobs for Canadians. Examples include TAQA North, IPIC-owned NOVA Chemicals, and DP World-owned marine terminals in British Columbia.
The UAE provides easy access to 2.5 billion consumers within 5 hour flights and flies to more than 160 destinations, connecting it to the globe. That is partly why over 150 Canadian companies have based their regional operations in the UAE and approximately 45,000 Canadians live and work in the Emirates. Canadian Business Councils are active in Abu Dhabi and Dubai; business links are also fostered by a Canada-UAE Business Council made up of leading executives from both countries.
Canada and the UAE are partners in combatting international terrorism, including the fight against the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).
Canada and the UAE work together to counter violent extremism, including through Canada’s membership on the International Steering Board of the UAE-based Hedayah centre.
Canada and the UAE have committed to sign a Defence Cooperation Arrangement to support further military cooperation.
Canada and the UAE signed a Development Cooperation Memorandum of Understanding in April 2014 to collaborate on development policy and to help third countries pursue sustainable growth.
With 1.17% of its gross national income dedicated to official development assistance in 2014, the UAE is the world’s top donor on a per capita basis.
