Ambassador's Message

Roman Waschuk, Ambassador

Welcome to the website of the Canadian Embassy in Ukraine, which is designed to provide information and links about Canada and our bilateral relationship with Ukraine.  We are always interested to hear from visitors to our site, in particular on how to make it more useful, please send any comments to

The relationship between Canada and Ukraine has a long history, stretching back to the end of the 19th century with the arrival of the first Ukrainian immigrants to Canada.  Since then, bilateral ties have increased in importance, culminating in 1991, when Canada became the first western country to recognize an independent Ukraine. Canada remains a strong supporter of Ukrainian independence and the integration of Ukraine into the trans-Atlantic political, economic and security space. Today, the Canada-Ukraine relationship encompasses political, trade, defence and security relations, as well as technical assistance and people-to-people contacts.

Building on consular representation established before Ukraine’s independence, Canada’s diplomatic presence has grown to include representatives of the departments of Foreign Affairs and International Trade; the Canadian International Development Agency; Citizenship and Immigration; and National Defence.  This Embassy also supports other federal government departments, provincial governments and municipalities, as well as an Honorary Consul based in Lviv.

A recent series of successful high level visits has served to enhance our bilateral relations.  These include, most notably, the state visit of President Yushchenko to Ottawa, Winnipeg and Toronto in May 2008; Governor General Jean reciprocated with a state visit to Kyiv and Lviv in April 2009.  In another milestone, in September 2009, Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Lawrence Canon, and Ukraine’s Acting Minister for Foreign Affairs, Volodymyr Khandogiy, signed a document setting out priority areas of cooperation between our two countries.  During his visit to Ukraine in September 2009, Canada’s Minister of International Trade visited Ukraine witnessed the signing of a number of new commercial contracts.

As will be clear from the above, Ukraine is a key European partner for Canada and Canada will remain fully engaged in supporting the development of democracy and the rule of law in an independent Ukraine.

Sincerely yours,

Roman Waschuk
