The Delegation

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) was founded in 1945 and Canada became a member in 1946. UNESCO promotes international cooperation among its Member States and Associate Members in the fields of education, natural sciences, social and human sciences, culture and communication.

The Permanent Delegation of Canada to UNESCO, under the direction of Canada’s Department of Foreign Affairs and in collaboration with other Canadian departments, provinces and territories, the Canadian National Commission for UNESCO and other partners, promotes Canadian interests and advances Canadian positions within UNESCO.

The Permanent Delegation to UNESCO coordinates the participation and policy positions of federal and provincial partners and other stakeholders to ensure a consistent approach within this multilateral organization and other UN specialized agencies.
