With a broad base of common values, deep historical bonds and a shared language, the United Kingdom is an ideal forum for meaningful artistic and cultural exchanges. It is not surprising therefore that there is a high level of Canadian cultural activity all across the UK. Recognition and esteem for our culture in turn impacts positively on our bilateral foreign policy, commercial and security relationships. Artists, writers, performers and other cultural practitioners, who can articulate Canadian culture, values and achievements, play an important role in demonstrating the Canadian perspective to key audiences and in opening doors for Canadians in other sectors.
The Cultural Relations Unit is a key component of the Canadian High Commission's Public Diplomacy team, whose mandate is to project a coherent, distinctive and influential Canadian voice to UK decision-makers and opinion-leaders, through strategic advocacy, profile-raising and network-building. Our work is directly linked to Canada's international priorities and objectives in the UK.
To ensure that our work connects with wider networks and remains linked to Canada's international goals, we work strategically with all departments, including the Commercial and Economic Division of the High Commission which leads on trade and investment and cultural industries.
Due to limited resources, cultural programming (including exhibitions in the Canada House Gallery) is strategic, focusing on quality outreach and cultural activities designed to bolster partnerships among key opinion-formers and decision-makers. We are also diversifying activities into new areas where Canadian priorities, leadership and excellence can best be highlighted.
Programming goals are achieved in association with UK institutional partners by facilitating and supporting selected artistic and cultural events, discussions, conferences and exchanges, as well as engaging in related activities that strengthen dialogue and network-building on key issues of importance to Canadians.
