In 2007, the Nevada–Canada partnership continued its upward ascent as bilateral trade totaled $1.5 billion. Nevada exported $563 million in merchandise to its northern partner making Canada its second–largest export destination. In return, the Silver State imported $983 million in tangible goods from Canada.
Over 40% of Nevada’s merchandise exports to Canada — $246 million worth — originated from several of the state’s industrial sectors: metals ($137 million), chemicals ($39 million), machinery ($33 million), and equipment ($37 million). Conversely, Canada supplied the state with $23 million in goods from the machinery and equipment sectors, some of which was destined for Nevada’s mining industry. The state also purchased $97 million in chemicals and $202 million in Canadian forest products.
The single largest trade sector for Nevada in 2007 was personal and household goods — primarily sporting and recreational equipment — reflecting the state’s gaming reputation. The Silver State sent $203 million worth northbound while importing $86 million worth from Canada.
Nevada has temptations aplenty for everyone, from the thrills of the Las Vegas Strip to the outdoor adventures offered at Lake Tahoe. In 2007, Canadians seeking entertainment and recreation made 937,000 visits to the Silver State and spent $769 million while there. Residents of Nevada made 55,200 visits to Canada spending $29 million.
Nevada is the largest gold producer in the United States and Canada’s Barrick Gold is a key investor and operator, employing more than 6,000 people at its various operations. Barrick has built a 115-megawatt natural gas-fired power plant in the state that became operational in 2005. This power plant supplies its Goldstrike mine, minimizing the cost of power consumed and enhancing the reliability of electricity in the mine. Quadra Mining Limited of Vancouver, BC is another active operator in Nevada with its Robinson open pit copper and gold mine located in White Pine County, NV, approximately 11 km west of Ely, employing 495.
TransCanada, a Canadian energy company in the state, focuses on natural gas transmission and power services. As the sole owner and operator of the Tuscarora natural gas pipeline, TransCanada delivers Canadian gas into northern Nevada at the rate of about 100 mcf of natural gas per day. TransCanada is also working on Nevada’s NorthernLights “inland project” which, once approved, will deliver power generated in Montana and Wyoming to Nevada and Arizona.
Canada’s Cirque du Soleil has partnered with MGM MIRAGE to create and present unique and innovative productions. Cirque is a major employer in the state and a major draw for many of the tourists traveling to Las Vegas each year from around the globe.
Aluminum Curtainwall Systems Inc. (ACS) is a custom, unitized manufacturer of curtainwall products located in Kamloops, BC. Specializing in exterior cladding for large building projects, ACS has been awarded its largest contract to date, to provide a unitized curtainwall for the Planet Hollywood currently under construction in Las Vegas.
