Academic Relations

In Austria

Ties in the fields of education, university studies as well as science & technology have always played an important role in the bilateral relations between Canada and Austria. Canada studies have been firmly established at Austrian universities for about 20 years. Courses, interdisciplinary lecture series, symposia and colloquia on Canada are a fixed component of the curriculum offered by many Austrian universities. This is reflected in numerous university partnerships and joint-study-programs, which allow for the exchange of students, faculty members and researchers, the reciprocal recognition of courses, joint research and publication projects, and the organization of conferences and seminars.

In addition, there exists a Memorandum of Understanding on Scientific Cooperation concluded in 1985 between the Austrian Federal Ministry for Science and Research, currently the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research, and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada and a Cooperation Agreement between the Austrian Academy of Sciences and the Royal Society of Canada, signed in September 1994. Canada also has a number of relevant agreements with the European Union which help foster academic ties with member states.

The Universities of InnsbruckVienna and Graz all have Canadian Studies Centres (CSCs) which are active in the Association for Canadian Studies in German-Speaking Countries (GKS).

Canadian Centre for Austrian and Central European Studies (renamed into Wirth Institute for Austrian and Central European Studies in October 2003) was established at the University of Alberta in Edmonton in September 1998.
