Overview

Liaoning is located in northeast and has a 2,178 km coastline. It is just west of the Korean peninsula along the Yellow Sea and the Bohai Sea and serves as an important sea shipping centre due to its strategic location easily connecting the province with Korea and Japan. Liaoning is the most prosperous of the three northeastern provinces.

Economic profile

  • Liaoning Province serves as an important sea shipping centre due to its strategic location, and has three major ports in Dalian, Yingkou and Dandong.
  • Liaoning is China's largest producer of heavy industrial products and its pillar industries include metallurgy and petrochemicals.
  • Liaoning is also a well-known fishery region, ranking among the top five provincial producers of shrimp, crabs, and shellfish.
  • Liaoning is home of Liaohe Oil Field, the third largest oil and natural gas field in China.
  • Anshan city in Liaoning is an important producer of iron and steel.
  • Dalian Port is the northernmost ice-free port in China, easily connecting China with Japan and Korea, and has a specialized terminal for the imports and exports of vehicles.
  • Shenyang is one of China’s primary industrial centers and is home to some of the country’s leading firms in the aerospace, heavy machinery, defence, automotive, electronics and software sectors. The city boasts one of the fastest growing software and automotive sectors in China.
  • Manufacturing and construction were the two biggest sectors of Liaoning’s industrial production in 2014, making up 44.2% and 6.6% of the GRP respectively.

Benxi AgriMarine is a wholly-owned subsidiary of AgriMarine Holding Inc., a Canadian-based aquaculture company, specializing in both fish farming and in developing aquaculture technologies. AgriMarine owns and operates salmon and trout farms in British Columbia and in Liaoning Province, China. Located in the Guanmenshan fresh water reservoir near the City of Benxi, the company is currently rearing China’s first Pacific salmon from Canadian ova. AgriMarine uses its proprietary floating closed containment rearing technology to farm the fish, which enables the company to produce fresh salmon for local markets year-round, regardless of temperature changes.

Whitecap International Seafood Exporters is a seafood marketing company based in Newfoundland and Labrador. Whitecap is an exclusive worldwide marketer for a number of the top processing companies in Canada, including Beothic Fish Processors Ltd., The Association Cooperative des Pecheurs de l’ile Ltd. (ACPI), Acadian Fishermen’s Co-operative Association Ltd. (AFC) and Les Pêcheries Marinard Ltée. In 2013, the company participated in the China Fisheries & Seafood Expo in Dalian and conducted successful export deals with several buyers from Liaoning and Shandong Province. Whitecap has also sold Canadian seafood to all major cities and coastal provinces in China.

  • Centennial College of Ontario has a program partnership with Liaoning Provincial College of Communication and another with Dalian University’s Business and Hospitality program.
  • There are Canadian Studies Centres in Liaoning Province established at Liaoning Normal University and at Dalian University of Technology.
  • According to the Canadian Information Centre for International Credential (CICIC), there are 3 Canadian certified offshore elementary and secondary school programs in Liaoning.
