Students selected for the Emerging Leaders of the Americas Program Meet the Canadian Ambassador

Georges Boissé, Canadian Ambassador to the Dominican Republic met with the selected participants of the scholarship offered by the Emerging Leaders of the Americas Program. The energetic and enthusiastic leaders will depart for Canada to spend a semester in Canadian universities. Twenty-three students from the Instituto Tecnológico Santo Domingo (INTEC), Pontificia Universidad Madre y Maestra (PUCMM) and Universidad Iberoamericana (UNIBE) will study in Canada during the upcoming semesters.

Kwantlen Polytechnic University, Vancouver Island University, Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières, University of Saskatchewan, Niagara College, University of Regina, Kings University College at UWO, University of New Brunswick, Université de Québec à Montreal, St Mary’s University, and College of the Rockies are the Canadian institutions that will be receiving these ELAP students.

The ambassador congratulated the selected students and urged them to take advantage of this experience, not only at the academic level but also at the cultural level and thanked them for choosing Canada to study. The diplomat also highlighted the fact that the number of participants in the program increased, from 1 in 2010 to 23 in 2013 and hoped that more students could benefit from this program next year.   

The Canadian government, investing in human capital and the development of a new generation of leaders in the Americas and strengthening the bond between Canadian and regional institutions, offers  through the Emerging Leaders of the Americas Program –ELAP- up to 1.600 scholarships in Latin America and the Caribbean to students in higher education programs, to study from one semester up to one year of their field of interest or do research in Canadian institutions of higher education at undergraduate or graduate level. The scholarships are provided through inter-institutional exchange agreements. Beneficiaries must continue to be enrolled as students at their alma mater during this exchange.
