Joint Statement by Ambassador Stéphane Dion, Special Envoy to the European Union and Europe, and Ambassador Isabelle Poupart on the occasion of the commemoration of the Srebrenica Genocide

July 11, 2019 – Budapest, Hungary – Embassy of Canada to Hungary, Slovenia and Bosnia and Herzegovina

As we solemnly commemorate the 24th anniversary of the 1995 genocide in Srebrenica, we remember and honour the victims of this hideous crime. We mourn alongside the families, friends and loved ones of the victims, including the 33 who are buried today. We pay tribute to the survivors and to all those who keep fighting for truth and justice. Denial of historical facts and glorification of war criminals have no place in a democratic society.

As a member of the Peace Implementation Council and as a friend of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Canada‎ is committed to supporting Bosnia and Herzegovina in its development as a stable, economically viable, multi-ethnic democracy, anchored in the Euro-Atlantic family. This can only be achieved through the promotion of reconciliation, integration and equal opportunities - first and foremost by elected leaders. Bosnian citizens deserve no less.
