Application for a Canadian citizenship certificate (proof of citizenship) from Italy

A Canadian citizenship certificate (proof of citizenship) will be issued with the same name that appears on your birth certificate. If you want the certificate to display another name, you must provide an official and legal document supporting the name change.
For further instructions or if your situation does not correspond with the information in the tables below, please refer to the Government of Canada’s website Get proof of citizenship.
The following requirements apply to children (minors) as well. If you are applying for a minor, remember that the questions apply to the minor.

  • Additional information or evidence to support your application may be requested when processing your application.
  • If your application is incomplete, it will be returned to you.
  • Do not submit original supporting documents, unless otherwise stated, as they will not be returned.
  • Provide a valid email address in case we need to contact you.

Include two (2) identical photos taken within the last six (6) months. On the back of the photos, indicate the applicant’s name, the photographer’s details and the date the was photo taken. Refer to Citizenship application photograph specifications for more information.original photos
Provide colour copies of two (2) different pieces of personal identification, such as a passport, a driver's license or a health insurance card, one of which must have your photo on it. If applying for a child, copies of the child’s personal identification are required. All copies must be clear, legible and high quality.
Italian identity documents do not need to be translated.

Pay your application fees online. Select the option Citizenship and then Citizenship Certificate (proof of citizenship). Fees are non-refundable, whether the Canadian citizenship certificate is issued or not.
You may pay for more than one application in the same transaction as long as you specify the names of each applicant.

Additional supporting documents, as required

1. If you (or the minor you are applying for) was born outside of Canada to a Canadian parent, send the following supporting documents:

  • A colour copy of the birth certificate which lists your parents, issued by the authorities in the country where you were born. In Italy, “estratto di nascita con l’indicazione della paternità e maternità” (also called “estratto di nascita internazionale, che viene rilasciato su un apposito modello plurilingue”)
  • A colour copy of the Canadian birth certificate or Canadian citizenship certificate of the Canadian parent
  • A colour copy of proof of other nationalities acquired by you and your Canadian parent before February 15, 1977 (if applicable to you), confirming the date and how it was acquired. Document must be in English or French or accompanied by a certified translation. In Italy, “certificato di cittadinanza che specifichi la data in cui si è acquistata la cittadinanza italiana e come.”

2. If you are applying to replace or update your certificate or you have a certificate of registration of birth abroad (RBA), sent the following supporting documents:

  • All available original citizenship/naturalization certificate(s), any pink transmission copies and commemorative certificates
  • A signed letter in which you describe how and when your citizenship document was misplaced, lost, stolen, destroyed or became inaccessible, and commit to returning it to the Canadian authorities, if you find it.

How to obtain an Italian birth certificate

The estratto di nascita con maternità e paternità formato plurilingue can be obtained at your local City Hall “Comune” and does not need to be translated.

Acceptable pieces of identification

  • If Canadian identification documents are not available, we accept:
    • passports
    • driver’s licences
    • health cards (tessera sanitaria)
    • identity cards
    • birth certificates with photo
  • All children who legally reside in Italy can obtain a Carta d’identità regardless of age and nationality. Contact your Comune for instructions. The tessera sanitaria is an acceptable second piece of ID for minors.

These documents do not need to be translated.

Translation of documents

  • All documents submitted as part of a citizenship application need to be submitted in either English or French, otherwise it must be translated by a certified translator (traduttore giurato).
  • Refer to the List of Translator and Interpreter Agencies.
