Italy's Retirement Income System

Istituto Nazionale Previdenza Sociale (INPS), Italian National Social Security Institute is the main social security organization and issues annually pensions in Italy. The Institute also provides other services, such as unemployment benefits and various types of assistance administered by the Ministry of Welfare.

INPS’ main activity consists in the liquidation and payment of various types of pensions: contributive, old age, seniority, survivors, invalidity, incapacity and, under international conventions, for jobs carried out in a foreign country.  It also provides for the payment to support  unemployment, disease, maternity, separation allowances and support to low-earning and large families.

INPS provides all the above services through the payment of the contributions from workers, independent workers,  companies, domestic jobs, etc.  INPS provides medical visits for the assessment of invalidity and incapacity,  for thermal cures and for emission of fiscal certification.
