June 22, 2020
Canada’s new Ambassador to the Philippines, Peter MacArthur, presented his diplomatic credentials to President Rodrigo Duterte on 19 June. The ceremony was conducted by videoconference.
In his remarks, Ambassador MacArthur reiterated Canada’s commitment to the Philippines. “Our amazing people-to-people links, expanding academic partnerships, growing trade and investment as well as our cooperation on youth employment, women’s health and empowerment, and a commitment to maintaining the gains of peace in Mindanao underpin our dynamic relations. Our two countries stand together in solidarity with the international community in cooperating to address the current COVID-19 pandemic”
Ambassador MacArthur also underlined that efforts continue to deepen bilateral trade relations between the Philippines and Canada. “Some of the oldest businesses operating in the Philippines are Canadian, today employing thousands of Filipinos. We seek to further expand commercial relations with such an important ASEAN economy including in services and direct investment.”
Prior to his appointment as Ambassador to the Philippines, Peter MacArthur was Ambassador to Indonesia and Timor-Leste from 2016-2019. He also served as Director General of the South, Southeast Asia and Oceania Bureau. From 2015-18 he was also Canada’s Senior Official at meetings of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum.
Ambassador MacArthur has served in numerous positions abroad, including as a Trade Commissioner in Moscow, New Delhi, and Hong Kong, as Consul heading Canada’s trade office in Mumbai, and as Minister (commercial) and Senior Trade Commissioner in Tokyo. At Headquarters, he was Deputy Director on economic relations with Russia and Deputy Director for policy and strategic planning. He also worked as Director for Trade Commissioner Service overseas operations, and Director for the China and Mongolia division. As Director General for global business opportunities overseeing industry sectors, he focused on science and technology cooperation.
Ambassador MacArthur is a graduate of McGill University and studied at l’Institut d’etudes politiques de Paris. He is married with two children.
People to people links between Canada and the Philippines continue to be strong. There are more than 840,000 Canadians of Filipino origin in Canada. “Canadians of Filipino origin who now live and work in our country have been a welcome addition to Canadian society. Their success contributes to Canada’s diversity and prosperity. The trans-Pacific bridges they have built are solid, setting the stage for the next stage in our friendly relationship,” Ambassador MacArthur said.
