Canadian Act of Remembrance Commemorated All Innocent Sri Lankan Victims of Violence
November 13, 2013 - The Government of Canada categorically rejects grossly false reporting by Sri Lankan media outlets suggesting that Canada’s head of delegation for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) engaged in an activity to commemorate the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam ( LTTE).
The LTTE has been proscribed as a terrorist organization by the Harper government since 2006 and remains so today. Canada recognizes the suffering that the LTTE has brought upon all Sri Lankans.
The Honourable Deepak Obhrai, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and for International Human Rights, Canada’s representative to CHOGM, took the opportunity to honour all innocent Sri Lankan victims of violence by laying a wreath at Elephant Pass in northern Sri Lanka.
Canada will continue to stand by Sri Lankans in efforts to ensure that all citizens can enjoy an environment of peace, stability and dignity.
