Canada concerned by appointment of new Sri Lankan army commander

August 21, 2019

The High Commission of Canada in Sri Lanka today issued the following statement:

“Canada expresses serious concerns about the appointment of Lieutenant-General Shavendra Silva as Commander of the Army, given the credible allegations against him of human rights violations during Sri Lanka’s armed conflict.

“This appointment undermines Sri Lanka’s commitment—to its own people and to the UN Human Rights council—to further efforts aimed at national reconciliation and accountability. There must be trust and confidence in the accountability process if long-term peace and reconciliation is to be achieved.

“Canada will continue to support and encourage the government of Sri Lanka to further accountability, end impunity and advance reconciliation.”
