Situation in Sudan
April 18, 2019
Canada commends the people of Sudan who continue to call for change after 30 years of repressive rule, and calls for the Transitional Military Council to hand over power to a transitional civilian-led political authority as early as possible, as demanded by the African Union Peace and Security Council.
We recognize the important role that women have played in bringing about change in Sudan and congratulate Sudanese women for their perseverance in the face of hardship. In this time of transition we call upon all parties to ensure that women’s voices are heard as full participants in society and to include women in all political processes on an equal footing with men.
Canada believes that the most effective way to reduce poverty and create more peaceful, inclusive and prosperous societies is through advancing gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls. For this reason the new government should immediately consider removing all discriminatory laws and policies that undermine women and girls, and ensure equal access to resources.
