Situation in Sudan

June 5, 2019

Canada condemns the violent action taken by Sudanese security forces to disperse protesters in front of the Sudanese Armed Forces headquarters on 3 June. We extend our condolences to the families and friends of the victims of these attacks. The killing and wounding of unarmed peaceful demonstrators is unacceptable and a violation of their basic rights to gather peacefully. The violence is also an unacceptable response to the valid demand for civilian government after decades of autocratic and repressive rule.

Canada is also very concerned  that today’s violence is an indicator that the current Transitional Military Council is unwilling to cede power to a civilian-led transitional authority. Canada therefore reiterates its strong support for the African Union’s demand that the Transitional Military Council hand over power to a civilian-led transitional government by 30 June.
