A Message from the High Commissioner

Photo - Janice Charette

I hope everyone enjoyed a wonderful Canada Day celebration. I know our Party Packs were a hit and congratulations to the first 151 Canada Plus readers to write in to win. It seems everybody loves a foam finger and maple leaf cocktail sticks!

I can see from the photos that creativity abounded and our national day was well celebrated with friends and colleagues up and down the UK.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, you are our country’s best ambassadors.

With summer upon us, I would like to take a moment to wish you all a lovely break, be it a short weekend by the British seaside with friends or an overdue trip home to see family. Safe travels to you all.

Supporting Canada’s artists

Victor Phillip Dahdaleh and Janice CharetteCanada House was delighted with the news that the Dahdaleh Foundation has announced a five year extension of its principal sponsorship of the Canada Gallery, housed in the High Commission. The renewed sponsorship builds on an initial commitment by the foundation, chaired by Victor Phillip Dahdaleh, which began with the 2015 refurbishment of Canada House. The Dahdaleh Foundation’s support will now run up to 2025.

Victor Phillip Dahdaleh and Janice CharetteCommenting on the move, Mr Dahdaleh said: “The Dahdaleh Foundation has been delighted with the work that has been done through the Canada House Gallery to give talented Canadian artists the opportunity to showcase their work and promote Canadian culture through an array of enviable exhibitions.”

Family fun time

The Royal Bank of Canada has put out the call for anyone looking to join their annual Race for the Kids in Hyde Park.

The 5km run/walk/jog/stroll is in support of Great Ormond Street Hospital and takes place on Saturday, October 13. A great family day out, followed by a festival in the park and the best bit is kids can register for free before July 16 so don’t delay.

Business Brief

The High Commission’s Trade Commissioner Service invited a leading UK financial journalist on a visit to find out what Canada has to offer by way of business education, with a special focus on nurturing start-ups.

An early result is this fascinating piece about the rise of women in leadership roles in Canadian business schools and the supportive culture in post-secondary education in Quebec in particular. Definitely worth a read.

Consular Corner

Question:  I am going on holiday to Canada this summer. As a Canadian citizen, I know I need a valid Canadian passport to enter Canada, however my passport expired years ago. Your website says the processing time is now 12 weeks, I’m worried I won’t have enough time to get a new passport.

Answer: As the busy travel season is upon us, we have seen a surge in the amount of passport applications we normally receive, resulting in a processing time of 12 weeks. If you have travel booked within that window or require a passport urgently, send an email to LDN.passport@international.gc.ca with the subject line “Passport application” and include your travel date. We will make every effort to assist you.

If you have a question for us, please email ldn.publicaffairs@international.gc.ca with the subject line “Consular Corner”.

Visa Info

Question: My Canadian partner has made an application to sponsor me for immigration to Canada. I have a child from a previous relationship who will not be immigrating to Canada with me and will be staying in the UK with their other parent. Is it correct that my child will still have to undergo a medical examination as part of my application?

Answer: Yes, it is a requirement for all your family members, whether accompanying you or not, to be examined as part of your application. For more information see: Who must submit to an immigration medical examination?
